BT National League Division 3 Pickaquoy Outfield - Saturday, September 12, 2015 Orkney RFC 20, GHK 34 Orkney RFC lost out 34-20 to league leaders GHK at Pickaquoy on a blustery Saturday afternoon. The home side had taken the lead through a James Linklater penalty, but it would be the last time they were ahead. A quick tap penalty gave GHK an unconverted try soon after and then midway through the half they went over again, converted this time for a 12-3 lead. Orkney's reply came through patient forward work, with Al Watson burrowing over from close range. The gap was opened up soon again though with the visitors right upfield and into the Orkney 22 again. Despite some dour defending they found a gap and were over again. Half an hour gone then and it was 17-8 to the visitors. Orkney RFC’S Community Rugby Project (CRP) has just received significant financial assistance of £5,000 from the Scottish Sea Farms Heart of the Community Trust.
The Orkney RFC Community Rugby Project is now in its 6th year and is still the sole sports development project operating in the Orkney Islands. The running costs of the project is over £30,000 so this support from Scottish Sea Farms makes a huge contribution to the future development of the sport on the island. The 2015/2016 Challenge for ORFC club members
Orkney had an impressive season in 2014/15 topped by their senior team winning the BT Caledonia Regional League Division 1 and securing promotion into BT National League Division 3 for this season 2015/16, as well as winning the BT Caledonia Shield. In addition the team’s hooker, Scott Rendall, also won the BT Caledonia Regional Leagues Player of the Season. All of this was achieved against the backdrop of away trips taking, at times, more than 24 hours to reach venues. So it was a great playing season and then the season finished on yet another high note when ORFC won the accolade of Scottish Rugby Union’s Club of the Year. This award not only fully recognised the achievements of the first XV squad but also praised and recognised all sections of the club and the ORFC plans for the future. Ellon played in the National League last season so the Orkney boys new it was going to be no walk in the park. The game started in a unfortunate way for Sam Kennedy when after just a few minutes he dislocated his shoulder for the third time, Ellon kindly gave Orkney two of there subs. The difference in game time was not apparent in the first fifteen minutes, Orkney really took the game to Ellon and were awarded a penalty for there efforts this was successfully converted by Sam Croy. |
