On a monsoon morning where most people were looking for the Ark rather than playing rugby, West travelled out to Westray. Indeed two players had to be flown out to make the kick off and provide the West with the 15 they needed to take on a depleted Westray team. Despite a great deal of phoning Westray could only muster 14 players with captain Stewart Rendall resisting giving Geordie Drever the call up and probably just as well as he was the only referee available.
With the weather changing for the better and the match began. Westray began the match facing Pierowall bay with the game soon descending into a battle of the forwards with West gaining most territory. Westray defended well and actually took the lead in a well executed counter attack with Stewart Rendall breaking from the pack and running half the length of the park to score in the corner. With the Westray players still in shock at Stewarts lightning pace the West counter attacked and ran a well deserved try over in the corner.
The game continued a tight affair at 5-5 until half time. Westray came out the blocks fastest with the backs finally gaining some possession, Brian Hughes taking a reverse pass and breaking for Westray with only some real stubborn defending from the West keeping him from going over, Heddle Drever appeared in support to go over the line, much to the delight of the Westray crowd.
This seemed to be the last straw for the West and they began to exert more pressure in the forwards stealing possession on several occasions.
Trevor Spence was leading the back line to great effect with superb supporting play from both Robbie "Satan" Stockan and Dave McRobbie. The next try however was hotly contested after what seemed a clear knock on by the West backs. Geordie Drever missed the knock on and despite protests the try was given. The West continued to pressure the Westray pack and with twenty minutes to go the extra man was beginning to tell. Three tries in quick succession, with both Stang and Dave running over their second tries for the West put some distance between the teams. The West were showing some superb supporting play throughout the team with Westray beginning to loose shape.
With five minutes to go the West were now ahead by nineteen points. The Westray fans were doubtful whether their team could come back as they were camped in their own half and struggling for possession. This is when Craig Drever picked up some loose play broke two tackles and ran the length of the park only to be stopped at the West 22 line. Despite some great support running by young Liam Drever he couldn't offload before the tackle. The Westray forwards were quick on the scene and Stuart Hagan emerged with the ball to release Colin Risbridger who went for the corner but was stopped short by the West defence. He stayed up and held on to possession long enough to release the supporting Hagan to go over the line for another Westray try. Final score 29-15 with Robbie Stockan, Steven Sinclair(2) and Dave McRobbie(2) scoring for the West and Steven Sinclair with two conversions.
Back in the Pierowall after the game, Satan won man of the match for West and Stewart Rendall picking up the award for Westray. Thanks to the West for travelling out and providing Westray with their first game of the season. Some promising performances from Westray youngsters Liam Drever, Luke Rendall and Edgar Thomson. It also looks like Westray may have a find at full back in debutant Calvin Rendall. Since it was Westray's first game of the new season further awards were presented to Brian Hughes for players player of the year 2004/05 and Colin Risbridger for most improved player 2004/05
