GIRLS ON FILM
Orkney Ladies rugby players were
caught on camera on Tuesday night as a Swedish TV
crew turned up for a lesson in the oval ball game.
Presenters Ola Eklund (front row, fourth from
left) and Mikael Mardstam (fifth from left) were put
through their paces during filming for the Swedish
Channel 5 programme the title of which translates
as ‘Drinkables’.

The 30-minute programme on
Orkney is due to be broadcast in the autumn.
Having savoured some Highland Park and Famous
Grouse, the presenters nipped out to Orkney Rugby
Club where ladies captain Elaine Stewart (back row,
second left) and a few of her team mates, along with
coach Rab Muir (front row, far right) and a couple of
senior players taught them the rudiments of rugby.
Elaine said: “They were trying to get us to take it
seriously, but we were having none of it! We showed
them how to tackle, how to kick the ball, and got
them involved in a scrum.”
She said that the training session was ‘a
lightweight introduction back into rugby after about
four months of doing very little’.
Orkney Ladies are now preparing for involvement
in the women’s Nor th Development League
development days and tournaments, which take place throughout Scotland during the season.
Womens Rugby in Orkney has been growing since its inception in May 2003. Numbers are increasing each week with up to 15 coming along regularly to training on Tuesday and Thursday nights. More photos can be found here.
Training:
Training is on Tuesday and Thursday nights, 6pm at rugby club (meet front changing room). With several ladies going off to college, we are looking for more players. Inexperience is no barrier and all girls/ladies will be made very welcome.
Coach:
Rab Muir

There are a few school players, though the majority of the women have never played Rugby before. Lack of experience is no disadvantage as enthusiasm is the most important factor.
We do play touch rugby (no tackling) as a warm up at training for anyone who is wary about getting involved in full contact straight away, though most who come along are often surprised by their own ability - and by how much they enjoy 'getting stuck in' !
We are a friendly bunch, and are always happy to see new players. Rugby is a game that is growing in popularity possibly because it is an inclusive game for all levels of ability and sizes- the player positons are so varied that there is a position for the strong, fast, or short person (so stop making excuses ladies!)

Fixtures:
The Ladies are always eager to arrange some fixtures, both home and away. If you are interested, please contact Lucy Rendall - 07899 040844 or Karoline Jolly - 07788444433.
