Match Report | Orkney Dragons v Caithness Krakens 21-9-24

24/9/2024

Orkney Dragons started their season at home against their friends from across the water, Caithness Krakens.

Over the years, the Dragons dominated the Krakens and due to changes in players and development the tables have turned.

The Krakens, having had a very successful first game, were hoping to achieve the same today and that they did. The Dragons, whose training has been hindered by lack of numbers, unfortunately showed today and one sub available for a home game is disheartening.

Lucky Golden Token nets a £5000 bonanza for the Rugby Club!

22/9/2024

The results on the pitch may not have gone the right way yesterday, but Orkney RFC was definitely a winner off the field with a £5000 bonanza after a Golden Token find at Tesco!

Linda Ross found the winning token as part of Tesco’s Stronger Starts, Golden Grants campaign where the winner gets to chose one community organisation from the three represented in-store to receive the money.
Picture
Linda decided to donated to the rugby club as her husband Bob, who suffers from MND, has received support from the My Name’5 Doddie Foundation.

With community rugby well established within schools around the county; more youth teams than before travelling south to play rugby each weekend and the successful introduction of our “Warm up Wednesday” after school programme, the funds will be well spent!

The club are extremely grateful to Linda & Tesco Kirkwall for the donation and to the My Name’5 Doddie Foundation for providing the inspiration!

If you have a child who is interested in taking up rugby, bring them along to a training session or get in touch for more information.

Match Report | 2nd XV make Orkney RFC history with first ever league game against Stornoway

2/9/2024

On Saturday 31 August 2024, a squad of 19 made history for Orkney RFC as the 2nd team played their first ever competitive league game.

Starting the season with an away trip, and island clash against Stornoway, meant leaving on the last Hamnavoe sailing Friday evening before a drive to overnight accommodation in Ullapool.
Picture
Upon arrival, Captain Martin Harper made it clear to the players to not let the occasion get to them and to treat the night as any other to keep their game prep as close as possible to a home game. So naturally the players headed out to the pub until the early hours, making sure the nightlife of Ullapool was as similar as possible to Kirkwall.

Orkney youth players head off to Perth on Rugby Scholarship

2/9/2024

The club would like to wish youth players Michael Scarth and Ronan Hamilton all the best as they start their season of rugby scholarship at Glenalmond College in Perth.

Michael and Ronan have played since Minis and Rookies at Dounby, continuing right up to U16 with Orkney RFC when they both were selected for Caledonia Player Development Hub (PDH) programmes.

They both were selected for the Caledonia squad representing the U16 level, with Michael also stepping up to U18 in one match and both lads then going on to represent Glasgow Warriors at U16 level.

Michael and Ronan were delighted to be offered a scholarship to continue their rugby journey.
Picture
Both are at U18 level now and look forward to their scholarship to progress their rugby and the academic year ahead

Everyone at Orkney Rugby Football Club will be following you on your next chapter and wish you both all the very best.

We are all very proud of you both!
