We arrived to a sunny and warm but much windier day than had been anticipated. Ready for the 12.30 pm kick off but unfortunately Irvine found their footing first and had their first try within the first 4 minutes of the game. The Dragons soon got back in the game with some good tackling and defending but Irvine got the better of them with their number 14 having some very strong runs and scored another 2 tries in the next 30 minutes.
The Dragons once again found their footing and with Alanna Smith and Katie Allison having some amazing intercepts in the line outs and Jessica Thomson having some strong runs playing with the backs the ball was once again with the Dragons and with some good phase play in the forwards with captain Emma Staunton, Sandra Davey, Nickie Milne, Vanessa Linton, Florence Ungaro and Kita Scollie working their rumbles near the try line with the ball being passed out wide and Amy Walker scoring a well deserved try bringing the score to 19 – 5. Unfortunately, after the next kick off Nickie had an unintentional bad tackle and was shown a yellow card and sin binned. With the Dragons down to 14 players, they continued to fight and successfully managed to have an Irvine try held up just before half time. Starting the second half still with 14, unfortunately again Irvine were hot off the start and scored another 2 tries in quick succession. The Dragons again injected some fire with Hannah Cursiter receiving the ball from kick off, weaving round Irvine and creating good space. Rheo Laurenson also being solid in both attack and defence, found space and had a lot of very good runs. The forwards showing good scrum strength continued to hold their own in the scrums and it paid off with Amy Walker receiving ball and shot off halfway down the pitch down to the 5 meter line but was high tackled just under the posts but playing advantage Leish Womack soon had the ball and scored a second try for the Dragons. With some player changes Amy coming off and Tyla coming on for her first game and our ever versatile player Lucy Flett coming on for Flo as flank. Tyla soon showed her strength on the pitch with some strong tackling. Irivine again came back fighting to score another try. More changes in the Orkney team saw Catherine Green out for her second game back showing some strong ball carries and tackles and being replaced by Cady Denoon out on the wing who again showed her impact on the pitch with her speed and strength of ball carries. With Natalie Rose making her debut replacing Rheo Laurenson and getting straight into defence and showing her tackling skills on the pitch. With the changes of players, the team soon reset and continued their strong play with Angie Shearer on the run again and scoring another try for the Dragons making the final score 48-15. Queens Of the Team for the forwards was the work-horse Sandra Davey, for the back the extremely fast Angela Shearer and with our shining star number 9 Aleisha Womack very deservedly receiving QOT from Irvine. Huge thanks to Jessica Thomson for the difficult task of organising the travel this year, John Cairns our coach for traveling with us and keeping us right, McPhails busses and Irvine Women for their hospitality. With the away games over the women can now concentrate on their next two home fixtures with Hamilton traveling to Orkney, Saturday 1 March for a 12.30 pm KO at Picky Outfields.
