The front row featured Cady Denoon stepping in at prop, flanked by the experienced Sandra Davey at tighthead and Skye Taylor making a strong return at hooker. The trio provided a powerful platform early on, with Cady and Sandra’s aggressive carries and Skye’s dynamic runs putting pressure on the opposition from the outset. In the pack, Grace MacLeod moved to flanker, while new player Fay Morrice slotted into second row alongside Allanah Smith. The revamped scrum functioned well, allowing No. 8 Nikita Scollie to pick and go, setting up the first try of the match for Amy Walker. Moments later, Orkney capitalised on a Garioch knock-on, and Aleisha Womack crossed the line for try number two. Garioch responded with a well-earned break from their number 12, Isla Sanderson, who dotted down for their only try of the match. Orkney’s backline also saw positional tweaks, but the link-up between fullback Amy Walker and captain Angela Shearer proved lethal. Amy added two more tries before halftime, showcasing great support play and finishing skills. A beautiful break from Aleisha followed, and she offloaded to Gracie MacLeod — a recent graduate from the junior ranks — who marked her second appearance with her first try of the day for the senior team. Orkney led 37–5 at the break. Second Half: Weather, Wind, and More Tries With the wind now against them, Orkney took longer to regain momentum in the second half. Eventually, captain Angela Shearer broke the deadlock, setting up Amy Walker for her fourth try of the game, bringing the score to 42–5. After a Garioch handling error, Orkney were awarded a scrum. From it, Angela pounced on the loose ball and powered through to add another try to the tally. Wingers Nicole Work and Catherine Green, both returning to the side this season, worked tirelessly in attack and defence. Tyla Whitehead also made an appearance from the bench during a brief injury check for Nikita Scollie. In the closing stages, centre Chloe Prescott — another standout new addition — showed her pace and power, scoring two excellent tries in quick succession. Jessica Thomson came on in the forwards and made an immediate impact with strong carries and key tackles. Making her debut for the Dragons was Netsi Sori, who slotted in first on the wing and later moved into the forwards, showing great determination and effort throughout. In the dying minutes, vice-captain Nikita Scollie — despite a suspected broken finger — pulled off a stunning interception and raced away to score under the posts. The final conversion was neatly slotted by Cailynn Williamson, who handled the challenging kicking conditions with confidence, albeit the weather was against her on the day another player to keep a watch on in the future.
Special Thanks:
To Garioch for making the journey up, and to our match sponsors Alison Moore — who braved the weather to see the new kits she helped design and fund — and Bryan Laughton for his post-match refreshments. Also, thanks to Lucy Flett who had opted to officiate and ref on the day rather than play and Jo Inkster for running the lines. Orkney Dragons will face Aberdeen University in Aberdeen Saturday 18th of October in Aberdeen.
