U14 Girls Rugby | Great North Challenge in Ellon 8-3-25

On the 8th of March, the U14 girls’ team coached by Sean Corrigall were South playing in Ellon for the Great North Challenge, meeting up with teams from Mackie, Ellon, Lochaber, Ross Sutherland and Garrioch RFCs for a day of rugby. Orkney was by far the strongest side number wise.

The girls played three 7 aside games – drew against Ellon in the first game, lost to Mackie in the second game and finally took the win against Lochaber in the 3rd – before splitting in two 15 aside teams for a final full pitch game.

The girls thank NorthLink and Orkney RFC for sponsoring their travel and are heading south to Moray this weekend.

“I liked meeting the new teams, I got some good tackles and tries, I think we had better defensive lines, the team Mackie had good defence.”

Keira Sinclair:
“I enjoyed playing the 15 aside game. We got more tackles in as a team and our defense line was better. One of the Lochaber girls kicked the ball then caught it again and then went and scored a try “

Lucy Reid:
“I liked playing new teams. We had good defense, and I Scored a try, and also we got to try bigger scrums and lineouts in the 15s game. Evie from Lochaber did good kicking.“

Aoife Spence:
“I really enjoyed playing against the new teams Ellon and Mackie. The Mackie girls were good at clearing out the ruck. Our defensive line improved the more games we played. I enjoyed the 15 a side but I found it a bit confusing knowing who was in my team as we were all in different strips.”

Sean Corrigall:
"Some good rugby played, attacking wise, good support play and running lines. It's great to see the girls get on so well. We had more numbers than any other club there and travelled the furthest. The girls played a full 15s at the end and it was very good for them to get a feel for it."
