Caledonia U18 League
Pickaquoy - Sunday September 10, 2017
Orkney / Caithness U18s 17, Madras U18s 17
With both Orkney and Caithness Rugby Clubs being unable to raise the numbers for a under 18 side to keep boys playing and continuing to learn the game it was agreed that they would amalgamate at this level. After a friendly encounter against Highland in Thurso last week the side played the first league game of the season against Madras RFC at Pickaquoy on Sunday.
The team played in new strip kindly sponsored by Stewart Henderson this was much appreciated by the club. In the opening period the home side dominated showing good strength in the scrums followed by good handling. After ten minutes the pressure was rewarded when Ryan Mooney scored a try after a strong run, the kick was converted by Stuart Kirk. Play continued with both sides showing a a good standard of Rugby, Orkney/Caithness managed a further two tries by Glen Brough and Cameron Fraser both conversion attempts narrowly missing leaving the home side with a 17 point lead at half time.
Playing the second half with the advantage of the wind confidence was high in the home support, unfortunately Madras had different ideas. Both teams made chances with Orkney/Caithness going close on a number of occasions. The visitors managed three tries with one being converted leaving the scores tied at 17 points each.
The sides next game is away to Falkirk next Saturday.
