RBS Caledonia League Division 1
Picky - Saturday 16th March, 2013
Orkney 28, Gordonians 13
With Orkney going into the final two home matches of the 2012/13 league campaign seeking wins in both to keep out of the relegation zone, they wasted no time on Saturday in achieving the first half of the necessary back-to-back victories.
Visitors Gordonians were caught napping as a kick through from Magnus Flett in the opening minute set James Linklater on his way to the line for the opening try, catching out not only the opposition, but many of the spectators gathering on the touchline at Pickaquoy on what was a relatively calm and mild afternoon. The try went unconverted, with Linklater’s kick just wide.
Orkney RFC U16s 8 – Moray U16s RFC 51
Picky: Sunday 3rd March 2013
Orkney welcomed Moray to the Pickaquoy on Sunday for the quarter final of the Caley Cup. Moray had been victors previously in the league season and brought another strong squad north for the anticipated game.
The game kicked off at a quick pace with both teams showing strong defence and astute kicking to put their team on the front foot. Moray soon took the lion’s share of possession and hammered the Orkney 22m line with their big pack of forwards but Orkney turned the ball over after sterling work from Euan Humphreys and Craig Stout.
Match Report: Picky- 2nd March 2013
Orkney hosted Caithness RFC and Shetland RFC at the weekend with sixty players aiming to show their coaches and opposition what they can do. With limited games available in the North for Under 14s this was much welcomed competition with everyone keen to see how the games progressed, developed and gauge how training has gone to date.
First up it was Orkney v Shetland and from the start it was obvious Shetland had improved greatly from last season’s games. Both sides showed that they have the capabilities to entertain the crowd with fast flowing rugby, hard tackling and passion from the start.
