Orkney Rugby Football Club whilst still mourning the passing away of one of its earliest members Ken Watson, player, chairman and one of a duo who instigated junior rugby in Orkney are now equally saddened by the death of his fellow coach James (Pye) Groundwater.
Together they established junior rugby in Orkney and it was their enthusiasm and commitment that led to the likes of Drew Leslie, Al Watson, Keith Oddie Andy McGill, Bob Gilmore and James Linklater to name but a few, to become regulars and indeed the backbone of the clubs First XV. The funeral of the late James D. (Pye) Groundwater will take place from the John G. Corse Funeral Home to St Olaf Cemetery on Tuesday 1 June.
Pye’s family would like to advise that the funeral is private due to the current COVID-19 guidelines to reduce the risk to others by not gathering in large groups. The hearse will leave the Funeral Home at approximately 2:50pm travelling down Foreland Road, up Holm Branch Road, left onto Holm Road, Dundas Crescent, Palace Road, Broad Street, Castle Street, turning left up Junction Road, Wellington Street, High Street, Old Scapa Road en route to St Olaf Cemetery. It has been suggested that Club members past and present wishing to pay their respects could meet (2:45pm) and line Old Scapa Road (in a socially distanced manner). Those with the red and white hooped shirts are encouraged to wear them. Following this year's AGM, the Office Bearers below have been elected for season 2021-22:
