Match Report | Culbean Challenge Cascade Split Final 16-3-24

18/3/2024

Saturday the 16th of March saw Orkney U14s host Deeside U14s in the hastily arranged Culbean Challenge cascade split final. With four days notice given to both sides, coaches from each club worked hard behind the scenes to ensure this match could go ahead – well done to all involved.

The match kicked off just after 2pm at the Stromness Academy pitch, the first half refereed by Ali Morgan and the second by Sean Corrigall.

Having played Deeside home and away last season, the Orkney coaches knew we were in for a tough game again.

Match Report | Caledonia Blues v Edinburgh 17-3-24

18/3/2024

On Sunday 17th March 2024, Michael Scarth and Ronan Hamilton made the long trip down from Orkney to Galashiels to represent Caledonia in the U16 development pathway vs Edinburgh.

Both Orkney players started the game - Michael with a first outing at Loosehead Prop, and Ronan at inside centre. Conditions were greasy after morning rain with early handling errors from both sides.

Michael settled in very well in the front row with solid scrummaging, not giving an inch to the Edinburgh pack. Ronan, who plays 10 for Orkney, found his feet in the centre, combining well with the Caley outhalf to get ball through the hands and out to the wings where good ground was made.

Caley made the stronger start with more possession and territory, with the pressure forcing Edinburgh into a defensive error, leading to Caley's first try 8 minutes in. 5-0 Caley. Edinburgh dug deep to eventually find a way through a solid Caley defence and even the scoreline 5-5 just before half time.

12/3/2024

U16 Caledonia Plate Semi-Final
Falkirk, Saturday 9th March 2024
Falkirk U16 v Orkney U16 (46-19)

The Orkney lads were off on their travels again, the semi-final in the Caledonia Plate. A boat trip down to Aberdeen overnight, with an early start on the road at 7.15am with a bus trip to Falkirk. A quick warm up and stretch of the legs, however this boat and bus journeys take their toll on the lads.

This showed with Falkirk scoring 4 tries with one being converted in quick succession of one another.

Orkney were playing some good flowing rugby and very good scrums. Michael Scarth with a quick tap penalty led to a try and a conversion from Ronan Hamilton.
