Gordonstoun - Sunday 28th September 2013 Final Score: Gordonstoun School U16s 3 - Orkney RFC U16s 64 Orkney Under 16s travelled down to Aberdeen on the Friday night boat and with an early start, they took the bus to Gordonstoun. The boys always enjoy going on this trip. The boys arrived at Gordonstoun School campus and quickly got changed to get out for an intense warm up. The weather was very close and, as the game went on, the sun came out and it ended up being a very nice day. Gordonstoun won the toss and chose to receive kick off. The game started off very intensely with Orkney dominating all over the pitch, especially in the breakdown with excellent rucking from Taylor Pirie and Euan Humphreys. The game was in the balance for the first ten minutes with both teams contesting for the upper hand until a Gordonstoun penalty put the home team 3 – 0 up. RBS Caledonia League Division 1 Pickaquoy infield – Saturday 21st September 2013 Orkney 30, Perthshire 23 Orkney played host to a Perthshire side they met in the Caledonia Cup fixture just a few weeks previous. On that occasion Perthshire secured a narrow victory by 24-22, so all was set for a close encounter between two evenly matched sides at Pickaquoy on Saturday afternoon. Orkney had only made a handful of changes with Mathew Byers and Graeme Slater given their chance on the Bench along with debutant Liam Sharpe. The early encounters were frantic, with both sides testing out the other’s defences. Orkney took an early lead when the forwards provided a solid platform through numerous phases to give Darren Mclean the ball in space. He was tackled by the last defender but slipped a fantastic offload to Adam Baird who ran in the try to give Orkney the first points of the game.
Caledonia North Under 16 Division Picky - Sunday 22nd September 2013 Final Score: Orkney RFC U16s 19 - Highland RFC U16s 22 Last Sunday saw Orkney U16s play Highland in their third match of the Caledonia 1 league which was a mouth watering prospect with both teams being unbeaten until the weekend but it was Highland who came out on top with a 22-19 battling win. The Orkney boys started out with real purpose with strong scrummaging, effective line outs and direct running from the Orkney pack led by Cammy Gray. Orkney were first to score with Sam Croy crossing the line after great work by the forwards which he also converted, (7-0). Orkney were soon rained back in after a good passing move put the Highland winger into the corner, unconverted, (7-5). The Orkney forwards soon made good ground back into the Highland half with good kicking by Ciaran Drever and four consecutive rucks led to Cammy Gray crossing the line, unconverted, (12-5). Caledonia North Under 18 Division Picky - Saturday 21st September 2013 Final Score: Orkney 50, Caithness 0 (w/o) Unfortunately Caithness where unable to muster a full team, after consultation with the home team they travelled across the firth with ten players. It was decided to play a game of three twenty minute periods with Orkney giving Caithness two players to even up the numbers. Ben Sutherland and Andrew Linklater showed great sportsmanship by agreeing to play for the opposition. It was obvious from the kick off that players from both sides intended to treat this as a serious game of Rugby and get as much quality practice from it as possible. On Friday 13th September a huge 478 kids were involved in the Orkney RFC Community Rugby Project on the outfield pitches at the Pickaquoy centre. It was a nice calm day for everyone to really get stuck in and play Tag Rugby. There were 54 teams involved with 12 different pitches. Eight pitches were for the festival and then on the other four was a competitive tournament. Schools entered different teams into either the festival or the tournament. Thirty eight teams entered the festival and the other sixteen in the tournament. It was a very popular event with many north isles, inner isles and mainland schools keen to get involved such as Burray, Dounby Evie, Firth, Glaitness, North Ronaldsay, Orphir, Rousay, St Andrews, Shapinsay, Stenness, Stromness, North Walls, Eday, Papay, Stronsay and Papdale.
RBS Caledonia League Division 1 Pickaquoy infield – Saturday 14th September 2013 Final Score: Orkney 76, Ellon 20 Orkney RFC put on a fine display for their first home match of the season as they took on old foes Ellon and scored 12 tries to the visitors’ three on the way to a comprehensive 76-20 victory on a sunny September Saturday afternoon at Pickaquoy. With little in the way of a breeze, and perfect underfoot conditions on the infield pitch, Orkney, playing towards the Peedie Sea end in the first half, showed attacking intent from the start and were camped in the Ellon half for long periods of the first 40 minutes. Former Scotland Captain and beast Jason White will be at ORFC on Thursday 19th September, from 6pm onwards, for a bit of coaching and autograph signing. Please spread the word so we can give him a proper Orkney welcome! Keep an eye on the guestbook for more info. Caledonia North Under 16 Division
