On Sunday 23rd Orkney faced a stern opposition in Aberdeen Grammar in their fourth game of the season and although grammar played well in parts of the match, Orkney ran out comfortable winners 57-0. With tries coming from Darren McLean (2), Aiden Drever (3), David Porteous, Duncan Gray, Jack Stout and Andrew 'the sloth' Linklater.
On Saturday 15th September Orkney sent a strong side of 20 boys down to Gordonstoun on a good day for rugby. The side had previously won 2 of 2 games and were keen to remain unbeaten. They had high spirits as 3 players that had missed the last game had re-joined the squad. Gordonstoun had also suffered two heavy defeats in a row which put Orkney on the front foot before the game even began.
The sun was out making the day very warm but with a slight breeze, making it much easier playing conditions that the previous Saturday. Gordonstoun kicked to the Orkney Forwards and the game began. Orkney have been struggling with weak starts and once again, this was the case. Straight from the kick off the long journey they took the night before was showing, with the entire team showing little effort to ruck and tackle. Match Report - Gordonstoun Away - 15th September 2012
Orkney u18s travelled down to play Gordonstoun on what looked to be a good day for rugby. Gordonstoun kicked off the game, well received by the Orkney forwards who drove forwards, after gaining good ground the ball was moved to the backs. Good running from the backs got Orkney to within 5 meters of the try line. The Gourdonstoun defence was rushed and gave away a penalty, this was taken quickly by Aiden Drever who dodged two defenders to score, which he then converted (7-0). On Saturday 8th September, Orkney under 16s were away from home to play Deeside. The game kicked off at 12pm under clear blue skies.
As the game got underway it was obvious that Orkney got off to a slow start. This saw Orkney concede an early try which Deeside converted. Straight from the kick off Orkney piled on the pressure which forced Deeside to concede a penalty, Taylor Pilkington-Tait converted (7-3). As play carried on a missed tackle allowed Deeside to break down the blind side wing which lead to the home team scoring under the posts. The conversion was successful (14-3) Match Report
Dounby: 1st Sep 2012 Orkney U16s were the only home team to record a winning result at the weekend with a fine display of attacking rugby which Ellon had no answer for. Dounby was the venue for the game which sees a return to the West for a Caledonia League game for some time in recent years. Orkney won the toss and decided to play with the slight wind blowing down the pitch away from the school and the boys were in control straight away after indecision from the Ellon forwards from the kick off. The Orkney pack were solid in the scrum despite the weight advantage being in Ellon's favour and with Scrum half Mark Sinclair giving his opposite man pressure at the back the ball spilled out in Ellon 22m line. Chris Munson reacted winning the ball exchanging the ball with James Nicolson and Orrin Fraser gaining good ground. RBS Caledonia League Division 1 Picky - Saturday 1st September, 2012 Orkney RFC 5, Strathmore 11 Two first half penalties and an unconverted try early in the second half handed Strathmore an away win against an Orkney side that failed to capitalise on lots of first-half possession and in the end could only reply with an unconverted try of their own in the second half. Neither side could claim to have their strongest 15 starting the match for them, but Orkney’s biggest weakness was perhaps the absence of a recognised goal kicker, meaning that a few kickable penalties were put to touch for lineouts. This was an 80 minutes largely played out on the Pickaquoy outfield pitch in fairly heavy rain, and the conditions certainly didn’t help the players in their endeavours. |
