Regional & National call-ups for ORFC Youth players

Massive congratulations to U16 boys Michael Scarth, Murray Robertson, Ronan Hamilton and Ben Sinclair for their selection in the Caledonia White Team to play Glasgow and the West at the RPC in Dundee this weekend, and to Cailynn Williamson for her selection in the Scotland U16 wider squad who have training and games in Dundee next weekend!

All Roads Lead to Rome for Orkney Cyclists

A group of intrepid cyclists led by Orkney RFC President Garry Coltherd is set to depart from Kirkwall on Friday night to cycle to Rome for the Italy v Scotland Six Nations match on Saturday 9 March.

Team “Orkneyinga Saga” comprises 6 riders and 5 support crew driving 2 vans & a motorhome and will complete the 1800+ mile trip in a non-stop relay in support of the My Name’5 Doddie Foundation “All Roads Lead to Rome” fundraiser to fight Motor Neurone Disease.

The Orkney lads were off on their travels again, this time away on Northlink Ferries on Friday night with a day and overnight stay in Aberdeen. The lads were up for breakfast with not having to rush to travel to Inverurie because of frozen pitches the game was delayed.

Me and Owen had met up with the team after seeing the mighty Scotland beat England at Murrayfield!

Match Report | 2nd XV v Caithness 17-2-24

Orkney Rugby Club's second XV suffered a heavy defeat to their counterparts from Caithness, going down 7 - 48 on a blustery but dry afternoon at KGS on Saturday, 17 February 2024.

The sides were deadlocked at 0 - 0 for the first 20 minutes of the game with both teams defending well. Caithness, looked the more threatening only to be let down by some poor handling and some desperate Orkney defence with the try line in sight.

Orkney did have some bright spells of possession though, with some good carrying by the front row of Connor Crawford, Murray Simpson and Simon Owen, however the home side failed to take advantage of the strong breeze in their favour.

Into the second quarter the Caithness scrum started to dominate and eventually the pressure told with their Number 8 driving over from close quarters leaving an easy conversion to take the lead 0 - 7.

The Dragons took to the pitch on what was a cold dull Saturday to take on opponents Howe of Fife for the first time in the national shield .

Orkney started with possession, and showed some strong ball carrying right off the bat with big ball carries from forwards.

The backs showed their defensive skills early on with a try saving tackle from Aleisha Womack, leaving the player vulnerable and enabling Donna Wilson to jackle and win the ball just short of Howe’s try line.

U14 Culbean cup competition – final group stage matches 11-2-24

On Sunday the 11th of February, 33 Orkney under 14 players travelled down to Invergordon for matches against Lochaber RFC and Highland RFC in the new SRU Culbean Challenge Competition.

These were the final two games of the group stage, with a place in the round of 16 at stake.
