Caledonia North U18 Inverness - Saturday, 29 November 2014 MORAY RFC U18s 8, ORKNEY RFC U18s 24 Orkney under 18 Rugby team travelled to Inverness last Saturday to play Moray, unfortunately due to injuries and late withdrawals they travelled with only twelve players. The boys were given the opportunity to play a non competitive game of even sides, given the high team spirit they decided to give it a go at least for the first half. Hi all.
We have just been informed that the U16s game v Aberdeen Wanderers this weekend is cancelled due to waterlogged pitches! Could you please tell all players to spread the word around to ensure we don't have anyone travelling to the boat!! Sorry for this inconvenience which is outwith our control. Thanks Mark BT Caledonia League Division 1
Pickaquoy Infield - Saturday, November 22 ORKNEY RFC 24, STRATHMORE RFC 5 Two tries in each half gave Orkney a 24-5 bonus-point win over Strathmore at a damp Pickaquoy on Saturday afternoon. There was a tinge of sadness surrounding the game as before the kick-off a minutes silence was held to mark the untimely passing of Laurence Leonard, who was an active member of Orkney RFC for many years, playing throughout the 1980s and early 1990s. Come along to the Rugby Club on Saturday 6th December 7 for 7.30pm for our Xmas Fling with dancing and buffet. Members and guests very welcome. £10 a ticket.

Pickaquoy - Saturday, 22 November 2014 ORKNEY RFC U18s 30, DEESIDE RFC U18s 0 On Saturday 22nd November Orkney under 18s entertained Deeside Rugby Club on the centre pitch at Picky. This was the first time Deeside had travelled to Orkney allowing the home team to play only their third league game of the season. On seeing the size of some of visiting team a tough encounter was expected, hopefully Orkneys lack of game time would not be a factor. At kick off time the rain that fell during the first team game had ceased and the wind dropped giving good conditions for spectators. BT Caledonia League Division 1 Pickaquoy Infield - Saturday, November 6 ORKNEY RFC 33, HIGHLAND RFC 8 Orkney RFC ran out 33-8 winners over Highland RFC in what was a sometimes torrid encounter at Pickaquoy on Saturday afternoon. With both sides suffering injuries that forced substitutions during the game it wasn't one for the faint-hearted, with three Orkney players needing a trip to Balfour Hospital for various injuries. Before the kick-off both sides lined up and the crowd, which built to 250 during the match, fell quiet with a blow of the referee’s whistle as a minute’s silence was observed for two founder members of Orkney RFC who have passed away recently, Rob Logie and Willie McGregor. It seemed a fitting tribute to hold on the eve of Remembrance Sunday, and it is likely that the minds of the Highland RFC squad were on their former captain and coach Colin High, whose death led to the postponement of this fixture in September. By Gregor MacLeod (U14s player) Last Saturday the 8th of November the Orkney U14’s travelled across to Thurso to play against Caithness and Ross Sutherland. The morning sun was shining and it was good weather for rugby although 2 days of rain had left the pitch rather heavy. After a warm welcome from the opposing team, the game against Caithness began. Caithness kicked off and right away Orkney attacked with powerful running play. Orkney scored their first try within the 4th minute scored by Jak Craigie, followed in quick succession by Scott Swannie, two tries by Glen Scott and another by Rhys Davies. Three were cleanly converted by Andrew Mulraine and one by Glen Scott. The team were playing some excellent rugby at this point with hard tackling, good rucking and quick ball out of the breakdown by scrum half Nicol Harcus providing plenty of opportunity for the backs to run. By half time the score was 33-0 to Orkney. |
