Match Report | Glasgow Warriors U16s Sunday 28 April 2024

On Sunday 28th April, Michael Scarth and Ronan Hamilton were again involved in the Glasgow Warriors setup as the U16 FOSROC Inter City series continued at Gala RFC's home ground, with two teams each from Glasgow, Edinburgh and Newcastle Falcons.

The final day of the series saw each team play three short 30-min games.

Michael and Ronan both started for Glasgow Warriors Whites in their first game v Newcastle Falcons 2, Michael at Loosehead and Ronan at 10.

Three Orkney U16 boys in Inverness for day of development rugby

On Saturday 27th April three of the U16 lads Balfour Norquoy, Jack Innes and Owen Spence travelled away for an overnight stay in Dingwall.

On Sunday 28th April they arrived at Highland Rugby Club along with many other U15s as part of the Caledonia Player Development Hub (PDH) programme.

They were mixed up into 8 different teams, 2 girls and 6 boys teams.

Orkney 2nd XV headed down to Skye for their 3rd game of the season with a squad having a healthy mix of youth and experience.

After the five hour coach journey they arrived at Plockton and a pitch in a beautiful setting, described by Swein ‘fae Hoy’ Thomson as “a bit too remote for my liking”.

The boys were off to a shaky start and struggled to get any flow into a stop start game that suited the bigger pack of the Skye team. Strong defence lead by Erlend Gilmore and Alan Pirie prevented Skye from scoring a try. Forcing them to eventually choose to kick the points and take a 3-0 lead after 10 minutes.

Orkney Rugby Sevens 2024

The 55th Annual Orkney Builders (Contractors) 7s tournament takes place at Picky on Saturday 4th May.
Come to the outfield pitches for a great day of Rugby for all ages!

Mini & Rookies Rugby Tournaments from 11:00am
Men's & Women's tournaments kick off at 12:30pm.

Entertainment - along with the rugby, there will be music, food & refreshments available throughout the afternoon.

In the evening, the clubhouse is open with a late bar licence.

Scotland call up for Orkney U16 player

Orkney RFC are delighted to hear the news that Cailynn Williamson has been called up to join the Scotland U16s for training this weekend ahead of their festival in Gala next weekend, where they will play Wales and the Netherlands.

Well done Cailynn - hopefully you will have your hands on your own cup one day!

Match Report | U16 Glasgow Warriors (Whites) v Edinburgh (Gunners) Sunday 21st April 2024

Orkney RFC had two U16 players in action for Glasgow Warriors on Sunday at Hive Stadium in the shadow of Murrayfield in the first of the FOSROC U16 Inter City games.

Ronan Hamilton and Michael Scarth both progressed through the Caledonia pathway to be selected for Glasgow Warriors as Warriors and Caley joined forces to take on Edinburgh / Borders.

The match got underway at 1pm at Edinburgh Rugby's home ground, where the night before the boys watched Scotland stars Duhan van der Merwe, Ali Price, Pierre Schoeman and Jamie Ritchie in action as Edinburgh defeated Scarlets.

Michael started at Loosehead having made the transition from back row for Orkney to front row through the pathway system, while Ronan started on the bench as one of three backs subs.

Conditions were fair with light rain throughout making the ball and surface greasy. The quality of both teams was evident from the start with fast dynamic play from the outset. Edinburgh were first off the mark with a converted try 9 minutes in.

Caledonia North Club of the Year Award Presentation

Representatives from the SRU are on their way to Orkney to present ORFC with the Caledonia North Club of the Year award.

Club members and supporters are invited to the clubhouse from 5:30pm tonight to see the presentation.

The Calcutta Cup will also be at the club house if anyone would like to pop in for a photo!

Under 16 pair to play for Glasgow Warriors in Edinburgh on Sunday

Orkney RFC are delighted that two of the boys’ under 16s team are representing Glasgow Warriors Whites this weekend.

Michael Scarth and Ronan Hamilton will be playing against Edinburgh Gunners Rugby at the Hive Stadium at 1pm on Sunday.

This is a huge honour for both boys and everyone at ORFC is very proud of what they have achieved!

UPDATE: Orkney RFC Social Tens 2024

We have made a decision not to have the 10s tournament annually and think it would be better every second year.

A few reasons but mainly there is a new Islands Tens tournament happening in May in Glasgow.

In light of this, we feel it would be better to stagger the two tournaments and hopefully some of the island teams competing will come and sample some of our hospitality!

We will be back in the summer of 2025, on the 21st of June, with big plans to expand the competition and the after party!
