Quickly after play continues Simon Owen set off like a freight train and supply the pass for Keith Holland to crash through the over 30’s defence and scoring the try in his first game back since his travel’s. Through out the game the overs showed their experience and punished the under 30’s lack of formation resulting in a try, shortly after the under 30’s replied back with a try of their own to even up the game. The overs started to feel a flow for the game with some cracking carries and a lovely run from Stewart Esslemont getting the best of 2 players and scoring the try Simon ‘the freight train’ Owen boulders through the over 30’s take the whole team for a little run be for planted down for the equaliser for the under 30’s then minutes later he does it again. On Friday 12 January 2024, ORFC U18s traveled on Northlink Ferries to Aberdeen to play Mackie RFC in Stonehaven in the first game in Caledonia Regional Cup. Orkney were short on numbers with only being able to travel with 13 players due to injury and other commitments. Orkney, under captain James Braddock, knew they had a hard fight in this game. At the start of the game Orkney found it hard to put the travel behind them with some gaps in their defense allowing Mackie to put points on the board.
At the start of the second half Orkney knew the score was behind them. They did not let this affect them showing great strengths in attack and defense. This paid off for Orkney with them being awarded a try in the closing minutes of the game by Brogan Russell. ORFC U18s would like to thank Northlink Ferries and Maynes Coaches for the travel and Mackie RFC for hosting them. U18s Coaches would like to thank the players that traveled at the weekend and played and made it possible for the game to go ahead.
