On Sunday the 26th of April over 75 young players travelled over the Firth to the Caithness Mini- Rugby Festival. We had 4 teams, Orkney 1 to 4, in the P6/7 Section and 4 teams, Orkney A to D, in the P4/5 Section. We were competing against teams from all over the North of Scotland, Caithness, Highland, Nairn/Kinloss, Moray, Ross Sutherland, Lochaber and Skye & Lochalsh. Although the snow threatened we only had a couple of showers and by and large the weather stayed good and conditions underfoot were good.
In the P4/5 Section all teams played well with some great showings by individual players and many tries scored. The Orkney A Team won their section and the Caithness A Team won the other Section making for a Caithness V Orkney final. This was a hard fought game with the final outcome close at 2 to 1 for Caithness. The Orkney Team were Aiden Cooper, Cerys Davies, Travis Davies Isaac Dearness, Adam Mackie, Sam Paterson, Christopher Scott & Jason Scott. In the P6/7 Sections Orkney 1 & 4 were in one Section and Orkney 2 & 3 were in the other. The Orkney 4 Team won their section without conceding any tries against them and the Orkney 1 Team came second in that Section. In the other Section Orkney 2 won through on try difference against Lochaber who had the same number of points at the end. Our Orkney 3 Team, which had our three girl players, Rebecca Braddock, Katie Lane and Shannon Passotti in it, acquitted themselves well with Shannon scoring many of the tries. This now set the scene for an all Orkney final of Orkney 2 V Orkney 4. As usual this was a hard fought game with both sides giving their all and no holds barred. The final result war 2 to 1 for Orkney 4 and this was the only game that Orkney 4 conceded a try to any team. In the winning Orkney 4 Team were Jack Mackie, Alexander Scott, Fin Hancock, Findlay Cooper, Tom McArthur, John Fuller, Ewan Stevenson, Liam Barnett and Reece Smith. In the Runners Up Orkney 2 Team were Archie Flett, Craig Brough Marcus Slater, Jamie Hutcheson, Cameron Foy, Vinn Robertson, Aiden Foubister, Cameron Milne, Ben Swannie and Reece Worthington. Our thanks go to Caithness for hosting a great Festival, to the Castletown Hotel for feeding the five hundred at tea time and to Pentland Ferries and Northlink for putting up with the traveling multitude and Harrold Coaches for the bus transport. All coaches spent Sunday evening happy but exhausted and in quiet and darkened rooms with large drams. Broken Abacus Comments are closed.
