Garioch U16 v Orkney U16 (28-22)
Inverurie, Sunday 25th February 2024

The Orkney lads were off on their travels again, this time away on Northlink Ferries on Friday night with a day and overnight stay in Aberdeen. The lads were up for breakfast with not having to rush to travel to Inverurie because of frozen pitches the game was delayed.

Me and Owen had met up with the team after seeing the mighty Scotland beat England at Murrayfield!

Orkney started well and were quickly near the try line but with no luck. This was a very strong Garioch side who were well drilled and quick in the ruck. Garioch were first on the score. A couple of soft tackles allowing Garioch in to score and convert. Thankfully Orkney didn’t lie down and with some good play Jason Buchan crossed the whitewash.

Orkney gave away a penalty which Garioch slotted home making the half time score 10-5 to the home side.

The second half started with Garioch kicking off all guns blazing with a try and a penalty. Again, Orkney came back with a brace of tries from Michael Scarth, both after good work from the lads getting the team up the pitch, getting the scrum near the try line allowing Michael Scarth the pick from the back and score with 1 try being converted took the score to 18-17.

Unfortunately, the feeling of a comeback is on didn’t last, Garioch came back with two tries.

Orkney were not giving up sand Ashton Bruce got over the try line in the left corner with no conversion this was the last action of the game with the final score being 28-22. Although Orkney were narrowly defeated, they never stopped working hard, putting ion the tackles, rucking, mauling all the things the coaches want them to do.

Orkney were once again outstanding as a team, with the journey travelling and overnight stay. They played the game in true rugby spirit. All the lads who come to training are all a credit to Orkney RFC and the coaches could not be prouder of each and every one of the U16’s. Whilst they are always a credit to the coaches and Orkney Rugby Football Club, a passenger on the ferry commented to coaches how impressed she was with the way the lads were behaving on the boat. Well done lads!
