Orkney RFC welcomes first ‘home-grown’ Development Officer

Orkney Rugby Club welcomes Sean Corrigall as our fourth RDO and the first home-grown one having started his rugby in West minis & served as the club’s Community Rugby Coach for the past year.

He takes over the role from John Cairns, who held the post from November 2016.

Sean is a talented sportsman having rowed to Under 23 British Champion level and is Scottish Indoor record holder at 2000m and 500m, and coached junior members of Molesey Boat club in London.

Having retired from elite rowing due to injury, Sean returned to rugby and played for a season with Bay of Plenty in New Zealand and then with US Avignon Le Pontet, a club based in the South of France close to Toulon, who start their players at three years of age!

Sean also had a spell at Boroughmuir RFC, coached U12s in N.Z. and U18s in France.

Orkney Sports Awards Nominations 2023/24

Orkney Sports awards is set to take place on Friday, January 27, 2024, at Kirkwall Grammar School. The search is now on for the county’s most outstanding athletes, teams and coaches.

The categories are:

Sportsperson of the year.
Young sportsperson of the year.
Team of the year.
Young team of the year.
Coach of the year.

Official of the year.
Volunteer of the year.
Young volunteer of the year.
School Sports volunteer of the year.
Hall of fame.

Nomination forms can be found here until midnight on 19 November when the voting window closes. Forms can be sent to the Active Schools team by post, email or online via social media. Full details are on the Orkney Islands Council website

Sports First Aid Course 18-19 Nov at KGS

There are spaces remaining on the Community Sports first aid course which will be delivered on Saturday 18th and Sunday 19th November.

The course covers sports related injuries and is SYFA approved. Please see full details below:

Time: 10am – 4pm (both days)
Place: PE Classroom, Kirkwall Grammar School
Cost: £120 per person
SCQF Level 6
Valid for 3 years

Farewell to John Cairns

After nearly 7 years as Orkney RFC RDO, John Cairns is moving on from the club.

There will be get together at the club on Friday night at 6.30-7pm to say farewell to himself, Joanne and Callie and anyone wishing to attend is welcome along.

We think you can all agree he’s done a ton of work for the club and a lot of it behind the scenes and will be missed both in his coaching and DO role as well as working closely with the SRU.

They will both be missed and we wish them all the very best when the twins arrive at the start of the year.
Please pass this invite on to kids, parents and other coaches and committee past and present - we look forward to seeing you all at the club on Friday evening!
(They have to be in Stromness for the boat by nine, so it won’t be a late night)

The annual Orkney Hot Tubs Social 10s get underway at noon this Saturday on the outfield at Picky, while at the same time the U18s host Dundee Rugby.
It’ll be a great day for the family with a BBQ, Ice cream van, Bouncy Castle & Pitch side Beer Tent.
Scotland take on Georgia in the Famous Grouse Nations series at 17:30 and there will be live music from Deep Roots Last in the clubhouse from 9pm.

On Sunday 27th, the U16s travel away to Invergordon to play Lochaber U16s with a 13:30 KO at Ross Sutherland.
