Saturday 17th March Last Saturday saw Kirkwall Red play Kirkwall Whites and Kirkwall Greens play Kirkwall Stripes in the latest round of the Jack Rendall Memorial Cup. Similar to the previous week, there were unavoidable call-offs and unavailability so 10 players from the Primary 4 and Primary 5 section and 9 players from the Primary 6 and Primary 7 played. Both matches were played in thirds so that the players were able to get enough game time to build skill levels and stamina. The Kirkwall players seemed to relish the proposition of playing against one another so the level of intensity was high from the first whistle. The tackling, offloads and support play were really good this week which meant that the games were played at a high tempo resulting in longer phases of play. The Whites narrowly won their match against the Reds by 8 tries to 6 with tries coming from Whites – Finley, Jack and Kieran and Reds – Christopher, Peyton and Tom. Whites: Cailynn Williamson, Morven Brown, Kieran Gray, Jack Innes & Finlay Flett. Reds: Peyton Dunnett, Jamie Rorie, Christopher Wishart, Jacob Reed & Tom Hamilton. The Stripes won their match against the Greens but the first half was a close affair with Greens scoring first. The second half however saw the Stripes step up a gear and win overall. The Green tries came from Kadyn and Iestyn with the Stripes tries coming from Ryan, Declan, Millar and Jake. Greens: Iestyn Craig, Kadyn Harcus, Alfie Copland & Angus Brown. Stripes: Declan MacLeod, Jake Ross, Millar Harcus, Ryan Linklater and Scott Craigie. Sunday 18th March
The rescheduled Reds and Stripes match against the East sides took place at St Andrews Primary School last Sunday. After their matches the previous day (and watching Scotland come third in the Six Nations Tournament), the Reds and Stripes were both up for the challenge of playing the East sides. Not all of the usual players could make these matches so Thorfinn and Neil were very grateful to the other Kirkwall players who filled in the gaps. Sunday saw 7 players for the Primary 4 and Primary 5 while the Primary 6 and Primary 7 had 6 players. The Red Team played very well together and like the previous day, strung some great phases together. The three tries came from Tom, Peyton and Cailynn. The coaches from both sides agreed that the final third would be more of a developmental fun session so three players from each side swapped shirts and played against each other. Once again it appeared that the Kirkwall and East players relished playing against their own teammates. Reds: Peyton Dunnett, Jamie Rorie, Christopher Wishart, Jacob Reed, Morven Brown, Cailynn Williamson & Tom Hamilton. The Stripes faced a pacey East side but certainly matched them in physicality during this excellent encounter. Both teams had long periods of possession and all of the players had to stick in and support one another. A great spectacle to watch with the East coming out winners in the end. The Stripes scorer was Kadyn Harcus. Stripes: Declan MacLeod, Jake Ross, Kadyn Harcus, Ryan Linklater, Angus Brown and Scott Craigie. Comments are closed.
