The girls Evolution Series Event on Saturday 16th of March was a success with three club traveling and over 50 girls playing rugby under the Orkney sun. Deeside RFC, Moray RFC and Lochaber RFC made the trip north with great numbers of girls from P6 to u18s to join the Orkney girls in a day of mix game and development, the palm of the stronger squad going to Lochaber with 24 girls making the trip! In the good hands of referee Jo Inkster, U16s teams from Lochaber, Deeside, Orkney and Moray, as well as a team of Moray u18s, competed in a round robin of 7s (U18s playing touch rugby against younger girls for safety reasons), before mixing teams for a game of XV. The Orkney girls, as part of the Babas team regrouping Orkney, Moray, and a couple of Lochaber players, won the 7s tournament. On another pitch the u14s were going through a mix a 8 aside games (Lochaber vs Babas) and training, working on rucking and recycling the ball with Orkney DO Sean Corrigall. Further down the pitch the u12s, playing 8 aside as well (Orkney vs Babas) were putting on a show of quick paced rugby : swift runs, impressive tackles, and disputed rucks. The spectators could enjoy this amazing display of skills while enjoying bakes sold by the girls as a fundraiser. Jo Inkster, who has seen and worked for the development of both women and girls section in Orkney said; “ It was really exciting to see such a good number of players attending the tournament. Girls rugby is an ever growing sport and their attitude and enthusiasm was a joy to referee. With a high standard of rugby on show the future of Caley Region Women's rugby looks great.” Thank you to the all who made this event possible, Lucy Flett for first aid duties, Eleanore Newlands for the food afterwards, the girls and coaches from south who travelled far from home to play with Orkney girls, Orkney coaches and parents who helped on the day.
Coach’s Orkney player of the day were Sophie Shearer for some impressive tackles (u12s), Dana Sutherland for attitude on the pitch, getting stuck in and working to improve (u14s), Katherine Baillie and Cailynn Williamson for turning up and playing their usual high standard rugby between a busy schedule of young farmer's concert (u16s) T.C.
