Orkney U13/14s v Caithness U13/14s Pickaquoy, Sunday 4th December Score: Orkney 55 Caithness 5 On Sunday the 4th of December, Orkney RFC welcomed Caithness RFC for games at Under 14 level at the Pickaquoy Centre Pitch. We had a squad of 30 on the day so the boys were split into a red team and a yellow team to give them a 30 minute 15 a side game each against Caithness. Photos: Andrew Thomson Orkney Yellow v Caithness report A great team performance today from the Orkney Yellows, impressing the coaches with the high level of work rate and commitment to tackling and rucking. Captain Balfour got his team off to a flying start, gathering the ball straight from kick off and running in the first try of the day in under 15 seconds of play. This was swiftly followed by a try from Thomas, his first for Orkney under 14s. Another solid performance from the front row players today, with Jacob, George and Magnus putting in a power of work. John, Jack, Scott and Dylan were industrious throughout, solid in defence and attack – with John and Jack both running in tries. John's first try was perhaps pick of the game, a true forwards try with every member of the pack involved as they crept toward the line. The half-back pairing of Ran and Ruari was impressive today, giving quick ball to the backline. Ran scored an opportunistic scrum half's try, his first for Orkney, following a rumble towards the line from the pack. Fullback Thorfinn T had another excellent day from the kicking tee with all his conversions going over. Wingers Rory and Alfie ran and tackled hard, with Alfie deservedly scoring a try for his efforts.
Orkney Red v Caithness report Another fine performance, with coaches as impressed by this team as the Yellows. The forward pack functioned well in this game, with some strong runs from George R and Owen, with Owen running in the first try of the game. Prop forwards Wilbur and Alfie tackled hard and made yards, with strong support from Angus, Halcro, Thorfinn and Ethan. The still fairly new half back pairing of Joel and Kaelan worked well, their speed of delivery allowed the centre pairing of Ali and Harvey to make yards. As we have come to expect, Ali tackled hard and was as excellent in attack - finishing as top try scorer today. Finlay played well at fullback, making tackles and scoring a try following some inspired instruction from a certain coach. A reshuffle of the team at half time saw Orrin moved to open-side flanker, Angus to 8 and Harvey to blind-side flanker from centre. Harvey showed his versatility by also kicking a conversion during the game. For the 2nd half Halcro moved to the wing, with Owen Spence moving to inside centre – grabbing a 2nd try for himself and last try of the game.
We ran out of time for the planned Orkney Red V Orkney Yelllow game, so this game will be played at our next training session. Training will be at the Dounby school pitch next Sunday the 11th December – 1:00pm to 2:30pm.
See you all next weekend boys, great work against Caithness. Thank you to Caithness RFC for coming across for the games. A.T. Comments are closed.
