Orkney RFC 17, GHA RFC 47
After the excitement of beating the Penguins in their 50th Anniversary match the previous weekend, Orkney came back to earth on Saturday 27th August with a defeat to Division 1 side GHA.
The BT Cup first round tie was poised at 12-7 to GHA after 40 minutes, with Philip Ross having opened the scoring with an early try for Orkney, converted by Graham Poke.
Any thoughts of a similarly tight second 40 minutes were quickly dispelled though. Orkney started brightly enough but three tries for the visitors within less than an quarter of an hour of the restart showed the true gap between the sides.
Orkney did have spells of attack though and they were more than a match for GHA in the scrums. A try from Scott Rendall ten minutes before the end only served to spark GHA into life again though and they scored two further tries before a last-minute flourish from Orkney saw David Hamilton touch down to make it 45-17.
