Orkney pile on points with nine-try win over Morgan FP

Orkney RFC kept up the high-scoring with a 61-15 thumping of Morgan Academy FP at the Pickaquoy Centre infield pitch on Saturday afternoon.

Their second home match of the 2014-15 Caledonia League Division 1 campaign followed the previous week’s 50-21 win over Mackie.

With early tries from Robbie Firth and Liam Sharpe, Orkney led 14-0 after 10 minutes, with both conversions from James Linklater, who unfortunately was off soon after with a knock.

The home side was looking impressive now, and they had secured the bonus point inside the first half hour with tries from Denis Hayes and Adam Baird, the former converted from hands by William Thomson and the latter slotted between the posts by Graeme Poke.

However, it was not all one-way traffic, as in between Orkney’s third and fourth tries Morgan had taken full advantage of an interception to break upfield for an unconverted try.

Another half-break from Morgan as Chris Guthrie tried to chip ahead up the right was a peedie warning to the home side to keep it tight and simple.

However, Orkney were soon back on track and William Thomson, Chris Guthrie and a second try from Hayes saw Orkney turn round 49-5 up – all the conversions coming from the steady boot of Graeme Poke, showing that Orkney has kicking ability in depth.

The visitors were first and last to score in the second half - two unconverted tries - but Orkney added another two tries themselves in between. The first in the left corner from Liam Sharpe went unconverted but Orkney took full points from their final score - a second from William Thomson, convereted by James Linklater, who had recovered from his first half knock.

With 111 points in their first two matches, Orkney head south for the first time this weekend, with Glenrothes the destination. There will be a number of personnel changes due to unavailability and injury, but there seems to be the makings of a strong squad from these early showings.
