On Saturday 29th May 2021 over 100 children met on the Picky Outfields to finish the season with a festival of rugby. Due to the COVID restrictions placed on Orkney for the past 18 months Orkney RFC had to put significant changes in place to allow the continuation of training for the kids. However with the dedication of the coaches and enthusiasm of the kids numbers have been as strong as ever. Primary 6/7 were able to produce 4 teams and P4/5 turned out 5 teams. These healthy numbers allowed for a good round of games with the West section dominating both P4/5 and P6/7 showing strong tackles and confident running. In the P4/5 Kirkwall A came in after West before ending the day mixing sides with East. Over with the P6/7 West had the top two spots but East battled for third with Kirkwall and the final game saw well worked tries coming from Kirkwall but East took the win.
Thirty Rookies were able to enjoy an hour of rugby which is an excellent turnout and by the grins seen all round it was enjoyed by all. The unusual season meant that this tournament- the last for the season had also been the first of the season but the display of rugby was none the worse for the lack of game practice. Thanks must go to all the Coaches who have had to adapt to the changes but have kept the sessions going through the restrictions. Thanks also to Beki Russell COVID Officer, Donna Wilson and John Cairns. It was fantastic to see the pitches full of rugby players again and we look forward to, hopefully, a more normal season ahead.
