Over the past two weeks Players from the Highlands & Islands have been involved in Scottish Rugby`s pathway representative rugby. With the Highlanders, Tayside & Fife, Central and North east making up the Caledonia region all teams and players were out to stake a claim for a Caledonia jersey and catch the eye of Scotland selectors for the season ahead.
Last week the Highlanders played North east at Inverness and lost out 20-30 so with the last game versus Central on Sunday at Kinross RFC the players were keen to make amends. Orkney had a good representation against North east with James Nicolson, Robbie Drever, Robbie Hay, Scott Smith, Cammy Gray, Ciaran Drever and Sam Croy all being part of the squad, unfortunately Robbie Drever and Scott Smith missed out on selection for the central game.
The Highlanders put in a great shift showing strong defence and cohesion to snatch the game at the death to win 15 - 12. Well done to the Orkney boys for their commitment over the last few weeks and their deserved victory at the weekend.
Coach Bruce Ruthven added;
"The boys have learnt a lot over the past few weeks and will now be involved in specialist skills coaching this season giving them the opportunity to develop further. I think they have enjoyed every minute and made a lot of new friends who they will now be looking forward to playing against this season."
