This Saturday’s game against Hillfoots will be the last one on the centre pitch this season as work commences on the new Lido, or outdoor swimming pool at Picky next week.
This will involve the grass being replaced by removable drop-in pitch sections with a state of the art 5G playing surface. It will be capable of being heated from underneath in winter to ensure that matches can continue during ice & snow conditions.
The process of transforming from pitch to pool or vice-versa can be completed in under 6 hours.
With a capacity of over 2 million litres, the pool can also act as an emergency floodwater soak away during periods of extreme rain, draining out to the Peedie Sea at low tide.
The Lido is being financed jointly by lottery funding in preparation for the 2025 Island Games and by the visiting cruise ship operators in a bid to boost passenger numbers to pre pandemic levels.
