Resounding victory for Dragons first home match

7/11/2017

Orkney Women 63, Banff Ladies 0

Orkney were feeling confident for their first home game of the season after a comfortable win the previous weekend but the women knew Banff would give them a hard fought performance and coaches Gary Nicholson and John Cairns reinforced the importance of basic, smart rugby during training that week.

With kick off due in 30 minutes, Banff informed the Dragons of their depleted 12 man squad so it was agreed that an 11 a side game would take place. Surprised by this news Orkney had to make some quick changes and were immediately on the pitch to start the match.

Orkney looked slightly disorientated from kick off and some uncharacteristic errors meant Orkney's first try was disallowed.
Banff had some strong possession and tested the defensive structure of the dragons but Orkney soon regained the ball and quick play forced Amy Walker through Banff's back line and she scored her first of many tries.

Orkney did struggle with the size and might of the Banff players but some tenacious tackling from Jennifer Scott and Tracey Mathieson fragmented any attacking opportunities for the opposition.

The stand out player of the day was Nikita Scollie who shone out of position in her new role as fly half, scoring tries and feeding the ball through the centres where Paige Archibald showed some neat footwork to dance through the oppositions defence also putting her on the scorecard. Tiphaine Cazenave also displayed great diligence to put her name on the try list and the integral Stacey Tualasea demonstrated wonderful perseverance to storm her way to one of Orkneys 11 tries also.

After hailstones, freezing temperatures and continued unforced team changes Orkney secured a forcible 63-0 victory.

As always thanks go to the coaches for the many hours of dedication and hard work, our match sponsor Alison Moore, Bill Berry for reffing and finally to all the spectators who braved the weather to come and support us.
