At the end of the 2019/20 season Orkney RFC and Royal High RFC were due to play a well anticipated Scottish Rugby National Shield semi-final. Then the world came to a stand still. All events cancelled and people were in lockdown. After the decision was made that the 2019/20 would be counted as null and void it left travelling side Royal High RFC with a £1900 chartered flight deposit they were unable to use. They very, very kindly got in touch with Loganair to see if they could transfer their deposit and gift it to Orkney Rugby football club as they would be very unlikely to make use of it. Loganair gratefully agreed to this offer and were more than willing to help. We received this statement from the Royal High President yesterday; |
“Back in 2020 Royal High were drawn against Orkney RFC in the Scottish Rugby, National Shield Semi final . That set us up for the much anticipated match having been a few years since we last faced each on the Rugby Pitch. Royal High decided to charter a flight for the day of the game from Scotland’s airline, Loganair, who were extremely helpful and proactive in sorting out details , given it was our first time we had ever done this.
Players and club officials were really looking forward to the trip and game... then COVID struck and all games were suspended.
After much consideration about what to do with our flight deposit which could no longer be used , we agreed as a committee that it should benefit the Rugby community and who better than Orkney RFC to assist them to get back to playing . Loganair was delighted to support the local community effort and graciously agreed to fly Orkney RFC to play a match on a future date. We are hopeful that maybe sometime soon Rugby returns for both sides and who knows another cup game at some point.”
Matthew Hicks - President - Royal High RFC
Thank you so much.
