For the past 4 weeks Stromness Primary School’s Lower primary classes have been participating in sessions of Tag Rugby taken by SRU and Orkney RFC Modern Apprentice - Liam Sharpe. The sessions were conducted within the new school, a first since it was built! The class started the block of Tag Rugby with simple game related exercises such as Stuck in the Mud working on the three evasive running skills – sidestep, dodge and swerve, and the four stages of the “TAG”.
Once the players were confident that they understood the basic rules and skills of the game they progressed onto developing passing. This involved shuttle passing in teams which worked on three specific key points: Hands up, ready for the ball. Passing the ball from the hip – no chest or overhead passes and communication – this is the most important as without it a team cannot play effectively! Towards the end of the coaching block the class moved on to playing games of stadium ball – this had the players facing off against each other in 1v1, 2v2 and 3v3 mini games. This incorporated all the skills the classes had be working on over the last weeks such as communication, catching and passing, running with the ball in two hands and scoring tries. Some comments from the pupils were: Connor - “It was great!” Leigha - “It was awesome! Stadium ball was great” Fraser – “Cowboys and Aliens was the best!” Coach, Liam Sharpe added “The class have really improved and progressed there Rugby skills over the past 4 weeks, It is really good to see the P1’s getting stuck in and enjoying themselves as well as the P3/4’s coming back and having a good time playing Tag Rugby!” Comments are closed.
