Caledonia North Under 16 Division Kellands Park, Inverurie - Saturday 23rd November 2013 Garioch RFC U16s 3 - Orkney RFC U16s 76 On November the 23rd Orkney U16s travelled down to Garioch to play one of their league games. A good result was expected as the lads had heard of heavy defeats conceded by this team so far. The game kicked off at 11.06am with a bright sun in the Orkney boys’ eyes. The game got off to a good start as Fergus Macivor scored straight from the kick off and Sam Croy converted (score 0-7). Sloppy play and bad rucking led to a succession of Garioch penalties, but with a strong defence Orkney held back the attack and Jordan Basford used his size to his advantage to cross the line. Sam Croy made another conversion increasing the score to 0-14. Jordan then took the ball straight from the kick off, running through the defence line like a knife through butter and scoring within the same two minutes with two fabulous tries. Two tries from Taylor Pirie and Orkney were ahead 0-33. The Garioch boys were determined to put up a fight and multiple plays got the ball into the Orkney half, no worries from captain Cammie Gray, though, as soon enough he was on the scoreboard after a fantastic run. The half time score was 0-40 to Orkney. The second half began with loose play on the ball and Douglas Murray took the opportunity to kick and chase, but after a knock on, the ball ended just short of the line. Orkney won the scrum and good passing to winger, Tom Gordon, enabled him, forty one minutes into the game, to score a try. Sam Croy converted the try. Just two minutes later Orkney recycled the ball and made full use of their backs resulting in a try for Sam Croy. Jack Scott made a strong 30m run with the ball which was then recycled to Sam Croy who made a further run to the line and passed to Cammie Gray for another try to Orkney bringing the score to 0-59. After several minutes, broke the gain line and off loaded to Ally Bradley who went on to score a try in his first game for Orkney U16s. The kick off was then received by Jack Scott. This resulted in a ruck and Ciaran Drever kicked to touch. Orkney stole the line out and after several phases Sam Croy scored yet another try for Orkney. The score was now 0-71. Towards the end of the game the Orkney boys began to tire and gave away more penalties to Garioch, who one hour into the game, finally got their name on the scoreboard with a kick for goal. Not to be outdone though, Orkney managed a ’final fling’ with good recycling and rucking from the kick off. Cammie Gray picked up the ball and broke three tackles for a final, triumphant score of Garioch 3-76 Orkney. Match Report written by Euan Humphreys and Tom Gordon
