Orkney under 16 Rugby Team entertained Montrose in the Caledonian Shield Quarter Final. Montrose arrived with only 14 players due to a number of the squad preferring a trip to Murrayfield to support Scotland rather than a long road trip to Orkney with a overnight stay. To even the numbers it was agreed that the home team would also only field the same number of players.
Playing into the wind in the second half Orkney continued to dominate the game with any attacks by the visitors being repulsed by some very hard tackling. As a attacking force the home side remained on the front foot with some very good handling allowing another four tries to be scored by Glen Scott, Rhys Davies and two by Ronan Gray, the final score being 74-0.
Although losing by such a large margin the Montrose team could be proud of the performance as heads never dropped and they kept the effort up to the final whistle of a contest that was played in a very sporting manner. The Orkney coaches undertook the difficult task of choosing a Man of the Match, after much deliberation it was awarded to Ronan Gray
Orkney now proceed to the semi-final of the competition and next Saturday travel away to play Huntly/Moray.
Squad: Josh Rendall, Murray Simpson, Kieron Morrison, Rhys Davies, Scott Stevenson, Keith Dearness William Omand, Glen Scott, Fraser Merriman, Glen Brough, Ben Johnson, Connor Hancock, Charlie Pasotti, Andrew Mulraine, Jak Craigie Ewan Casely and Jamie Clouston.
