Breakfast in the morning was enjoyed on board the boat and after a short walk we were at Gilbertson Park, quickly changed and another short walk to Clickimin. The boys got a good warm up and on a bright blustery day they were rugby ready. Orkney kicked off against the wind, Orkney forced a lineout, recycled the ball from the ruck through the hands to Ashton Sutherland, he rounded his man and touched down for a try within 2 minutes. Orkney then had quite a bit of defending to do, Shetland were camped on the 5-metre line, but the defence stood strong. Orkney got a scrum on their 5-metre line and from there they had a good passage of play up the field from one side to the other and again the ball got fed to Ashton Sutherland who crossed the whitewash making score 0-10 with strong face winds conversions were extremely difficult. From the kick off Orkney were back in the 22 but couldn’t breach the home defence. Shetland had a brief encounter into the Orkney half, but Orkney’s defence and scrummaging was working well, they got back up deep in the Shetland half where Ashton Sutherland was bundled into touch. Shetland were giving Orkney a game with some good driving play; they were back in Orkney’s 22 but again defence stood up. Orkney played out with good drives and protection of the ball and worked their wat to 5-metre where the home side gave away a penalty, quick thinking and tap by Michael Scarth and he dived over. This try really stung Shetland into action and they got stuck into Orkney. The lads having to battle a very heavy shower, this was to Shetland’s advantage as they scored just at half time making score 5-15. Orkney now had the wind on their backs, and it showed 2 minutes into the half Orkney got a scrum the ball was fed out to Ronan he ran round all the defence to score under the posts, conversions were considerably easier with the wind change score 5-22. Orkney giving Shetland no time on the ball and going over in the corner Ashton Sutherland with hat trick. Straight from the kick off Orkney were down the left across the field a pickup and drive from Owen Spence who was now number 8 after an early change in the first half with Balfour Norquoy going off with a shoulder injury, Michael Scarth moved into 2nd row and Ian Moar on the blindside. A ruck formed the ball passed to Michael Scarth who went over. Orkney were now recycling well from the rucks with Tom Hamiton going over and Ronan converting making score 5-41. Orkney were now in complete ascendancy again recycling the ball and again and again. From one of these rucks Michael Scarth went over for his hattrick. The next try came from a complete mix up in the Shetland defence. Then with punching runs from Owen Spence and Jack Doyle a tackle behind the try line and Finlay Flett seized the opportunity to score. Jack Doyle came off and Ronan Hamilton switched to full back and Thorfinn Thomson on at number 10. Straight from the kick off Owen Spence gathered the ball and set off from well behind 10-metre line and evaded would be tacklers and scored under the posts with Thorfinn converting making score 5-62.
Again, a great game played in the right spirit of rugby, although loosing heavily Sherland never gave up. All the boys must take great heart at the win from the squad, the guys who travelled to support, a special mention to Ashton Sutherland for outstanding commitment after travelling to Aberdeen after training on Wednesday night played football on Thursday travelled back to Orkney and straight to Shetland to play rugby on Friday! Thanks once again to Northlink Ferries for their support.
